One Spec Changes Everything
Most people buy a poster tube based on length. That's the wrong starting point. The spec that determines whether your print survives storage is interior diameter, and it's the one almost nobody thinks about until a print is already damaged.
Why Diameter Is the Critical Spec
When a print is rolled into a tube that's too narrow, it's under constant mechanical stress. The paper fibers are bent tighter than they want to be. Silkscreen ink layers can crack along the roll axis. Given enough time, the print retains that tight curl permanently. A wide-diameter tube allows a loose roll. The print isn't under tension. It comes out flat.
Standard Concert Print Sizes
| Print Size | Format |
|---|---|
| 11" x 17" | Handbill, mini poster |
| 13" x 19" | Small venue print |
| 18" x 24" | Standard venue print (most common) |
| 24" x 36" | Large format, festival print |
The GruvTube Diameter Match
| Print Size | Minimum Diameter | GruvTube Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 11" x 17" | 2" | 3" (still the right call for reuse and future larger prints) |
| 18" x 24" | 2.5" | 3"+ |
| 24" x 36" | 3" | 3.5"+ |
| Multiple prints (2-3) | 3.5" | 4"+ |
GruvTube's 3.75" wide-diameter polycarbonate body is built for the 18x24 and 24x36 range, the prints that matter most to serious collectors. A single wide-diameter poster tube handles all of these without over-rolling.
Length, the Simple Part
- 18" print → 20" tube minimum
- 24" print → 26" tube minimum
- 36" print → 38" tube minimum
Tubes over 22" won't fit in airline overhead bins. A polycarbonate tube checked with your bags handles baggage handling. Cardboard doesn't.
Special Cases
Foil Prints
Foil prints require a slightly wider tube than standard prints of the same size. Go one size up from the standard recommendation and roll face-out, print-side out. See our foil print guide for the full technique.
Multi-Night Runs
Use a 4"+ interior diameter for two prints, and wrap each in Kraft paper before nesting. Don't try to fit two prints into a tube sized for one.
Large Format Festival Prints
For anything over 24" wide, the 3.5"+ recommendation is a floor, not a ceiling. Wider is always safer.
Single-Print Collectors
If you're only carrying one 18x24 print at a time, compact travel matters more than extra room. The 19-inch tube built for single prints covers the standard venue print size at 19" length, without the extra length you don't need.
The Clear Tube Advantage at the Door
GruvTube's clear polycarbonate body means security at venues can see the contents without making you open it. You're not unrolling a fresh print at the entrance because a security guard needs to verify what's inside.
One Tube, Built Right
GruvTube is designed around the specs that actually protect prints: wide interior diameter, polycarbonate body, twist-lock caps, metal hardware strap. Size it to your largest print and it handles everything smaller automatically.
